Listening to University Students at Hustings

This week Tom took part in a hustings hosted by the Students' Union at Bournemouth University (SUBU).

The hustings was an opportunity for candidates from both Bournemouth West and Bournemouth East to answer questions posed by students. The Conservative candidates declined to participate in the event.

Tom answered questions from students on a wide range of subject including the cost of living, mental health support, international students, freedom of speech and the conflict in Gaza. It was a chance to set out Labour's ambitious vision for the country as well as their costed plans to deal with the cost of living, NHS waiting lists, and mental health support.

The event was also a chance to let students know just how important their votes could be in the upcoming election and why they should back Labour.

In the last UK elections, only 47% of 18-24 year olds turned out to vote, compared to the 74% among over 65s is very concerning. As a candidate, Tom takes seriously the responsibility to motivate younger people to take part in our democracy by listening to their views and offering solutions to their problems.

Tom Hayes, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Bournemouth East, said: “I want to thank the Students’ Union at Bournemouth University for inviting me to take part in the debate ahead of a general election. I was very impressed with the interest in the discussion from Bournemouth’s students. With the general elections later this year, it was great to see an event that was encouraging students to register to vote and make an informed decision about who to vote for when the time comes.”
