Visiting Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club

Your Labour parliamentary candidate Tom introduced Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary Steve Reed MP to Sue, a Trustee and Secretary, and Julian from Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club.

Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club was founded in 1986 and now has more than 130 members from age 7 to 65+.  Tom and Steve met with Sue and Sponge at the club house at the bottom of St Catherine’s path on the promenade near to Sobo Beach.

The Club works closely with RNLI Lifeguards and the Coastguard (Maritime and Coastguard Agency) to keep our community safe by providing coastal surveillance and using Inshore Rescue Boat, rescue boards, and surf skis. Tom and Steve heard about the work of the Club and how it has supported a number of local events over the years by providing safety cover, in and out of the sea, including the Brownsea Island swim, the Seahorse Swim, seafront marathons and triathlons, the Bournemouth Air Festival and the Macmillan Caring Locally annual Christmas Dip.

Tom Hayes, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Bournemouth East, said: “It was great to introduce Steve Reed, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary, to the wonderful local people who make Southbourne Surf Life Saving Club happen. It was a shame, too, to hear of the impact of water pollution on people’s health and I am determined to stop local people getting poorly when they swim in our sea. Sewage steals local people’s health and futures and we need to stop it.”
