Moordown Plus Saved!

The specialist dementia service at Moordown Plus Day Centre has been saved from closure. The Connect centres including Boscombe Connect have also been saved. The decision was taken by BCP Council’s Cabinet at a meeting on 6 March 2024 which Tom attended to represent carers’ concerns.

Alongside a carer Debbie Davies, Tom launched a survey for carers, service users, and people concerned by the planned closure to share their views.

These views were also shared by Tom and carer Debbie Davies with BCP Council Leader Councillor Vikki Slade in a meeting at the Civic Centre a couple of weeks before the Cabinet meeting.

The campaign has been supported by Stephen Kinnock MP, a shadow minister whose mother recently died following an Alzheimer’s diagnosis.

Tom Hayes, Labour’s Parliamentary Candidate for Bournemouth East, said: “We can solve big problems when we work together, cross-party. We all know the council faces a terrible financial mess. Working with the Council and its Leader, carers, service users, and myself have been able to make the case for saving Moordown Plus. It’s great to see the Council listening.

I’ve seen first-hand, from visiting the centre and talking with carers, that Moordown Plus plays a critical role in our community. There’s an incredible team with the time to care and a purpose-built community space, all there to support people with dementia and carers who need some downtime to look after themselves too.”
